The enespa Group joins the ranks of AdBlue® producers. At its newly opened site in Bernsdorf, Germany, it started mixing the fuel, which reduces nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines by up to 98%, in the first quarter of 2024. Following successful certification, sales started successfully in April. 100 tonnes of AdBlue® can be produced per day.

The AdBlue® production process
The enespa Group set up AdBlue® production at its new site in Bernsdorf during the first quarter of 2024. It currently employs ten people there. "We process two raw materials here," explains site manager Michael Richter, "firstly technical urea with a content of 46%, and secondly demineralised water produced by the in-house osmosis plant." The two raw materials are fed into the mixing tank in a ratio determined by the system control. 100 tonnes of AdBlue® can be produced per day. The tank farm holds up to 120 tonnes of this before it goes to the distribution section.
Transport and filling
A pipeline from the tank farm supplies tanker lorries with AdBlue®. IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers) with a capacity of 1,000 litres are also filled directly from the tank hose. For filling the other containers, the AdBlue® flows via pipeline to the filling plant. At the end, ready-labelled 5 and 10 litre canisters emerge from this. The first bulk customers were already served from Bernsdorf in April. An online shop is currently being set up for the B2C sector.
Quality assurance as part of certification

Production alone is not enough. Certification from the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) is a prerequisite for being allowed to sell AdBlue®. This was achieved in March 2024. One audit element concerns quality assurance. Each fresh AdBlue® mixture has a batch number that ensures traceability. A sample of each mixture is sent to a laboratory. Various parameters are analysed there. The batch is only released if everything is correct. "Correctly produced AdBlue® can reduce the pollutant emissions of diesel engines by up to 98% and thus reduce environmental pollution," says Michael Richter.

New location, new business division
enespa oil gmbh in Hoyerswerda, around 15 kilometres from the Bernsdorf site, is responsible for the new AdBlue® division. The pyrolysis plants, which are part of enespa's oil refining business segment, are also located there. At another site in Tangstedt near Hamburg, pyrolysis plants are being built for the aforementioned and two other business areas, tyre pyrolysis and chemical plastics recycling. The diversification of the product range through AdBlue® production represents a further mainstay for the enespa Group.
What is AdBlue®?
AdBlue® is an aqueous, clear solution consisting of around one third high-purity urea and around two thirds demineralised water. It is used in diesel-powered vehicles with SCR catalytic converters. By injecting AdBlue® into the exhaust gas stream, nitrogen oxide emissions, which contribute to air pollution and health problems, are reduced by up to 98% in the best-case scenario. The result is an improvement in air quality. Without the exhaust gas aftertreatment process, the strict emissions standards for diesel vehicles cannot be met. The technology is an important part of efforts to combat climate change.
